UMD Farmfest 2017 has exciting developments this year as they will host a performance by The Magic Smelt Puppet Master as well as more children's activities.

On Sunday, September 18th, UMD's Sustainable Agricultural Project is throwing the Food and Farm Festival. The eventruns from 10am to 2pm and features a local meal prepared with UMD Farm produce, live local music by Borderstone, activities for kids including a petting zoo, and a scenic 5k trail run/walk through the farm property. All proceeds benefit the Sustainable Agriculture Project.

The Food and Farm Festival is happening at the UMD Sustainable Agriculture Project Farm, 3568 Riley Road in Duluth just off Jean Duluth Rd.

Sustainability can be found many places in Duluth, including UMD's campus. Since its start in 2009, UMD's Sustainable Agriculture Project has made a lot of positive changes on campus, especially in the dining hall.

We talk with UMD Professor Randy Hanson about UMD's Sustainable Agriculture Project (SAP), a fifteen-acre "land lab" that utilizes sustainable farming practices.  SAP was formed in 2009 to "institute education, research, and regional engagement around community food and agriculture systems in the western Lake Superior bioregion."

It's quiet, it's efficient, it shouldn't wear out and it even collapses for easier access if it needs to be looked at.  They flipped the switch on the UMD farm's new wind turbine on Earth Day, and Mindy Granley, UMD's Sustainability Director, says the project could be one of those win/win/win partnerships for the turbine's manufacturer, Windtech; UMD and UMD students in a variety of disciplines.
