5/27 Radio Gallery: Tweevenings

John (Butch) Holden joins Radio Gallery this week to share his passion for ceramics. Holden, a Professor of Visual Arts at Bemidji State University and Jim Grittner, Professor Emeritus of Ceramics at the University of Wisconsin Superior will be at the Tweed Museum of Art on June 2 at 6:30 pm as part of the Tweevening series to discuss glazing techniques from the Resurfaced, Reformed: Evolution in Studio Ceramics exhibition going on now. Listen as Holden describes the processes and science behind the creation of these stunning surfaces.

40 years of the work of internationally recognized watercolorist Cheng-Khee Chee is being honored through September at UMD's Tweed Museum of Art.  "The Way of Cheng-Khee Chee: Paintings 1974-2014" opened last week.  In the weeks and months to come, events include an artist painting demonstration, workshops and various gallery talks.  Annie Dugan, the curator of the Duluth Art Institute, tells us more.

This week on Radio Gallery we are excited to welcome internationally celebrated watercolorist Cheng-Khee Chee. The exhibition brings together 40 watercolors created over the past 40 years, which depict Chee's experiences and influences from both Eastern and Western culture. The exhibition will run from May 12-September 20 in the Tweed Museum of Art at the University of Minnesota Duluth with an opening reception on May 14 from 6-8 pm.

4/22 Radio Gallery: Christopher Atkins

With Open Studio and the Student Exhibition celebration just around the corner, Radio Gallery welcomes Christopher Atkins, the coordinator of the Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Sam Michaels a designer at Studio on Fire.  They serving as jurors together selecting the works and awards for the UMD Student Exhibition at the Tweed Museum. They both spoke at UMD on Tuesday April 21, as part of the Visual Culture Lecture Series.

4/15 Radio Gallery: Student Exhibition

It's that time of year again for the Annual Student Exhibition at UMD's Tweed Museum of Art. We are joined by Molly Streiff, an art student at UMD who is a part of the show. The opening reception is April 25th from 4-6pm in the Tweed Museum and will be on display until April 30th.  Also on April 25th, the Fine Arts department is hosting Open Studio giving the community a chance to see where and how the magic is made and participate in art making activities. Enjoy demos, food, music, and student artwork as well. Stay tuned for behind-the-scenes details about this exciting event.

This week on Radio Gallery we are joined by Dorian Beaulieu, the speaker at this week’s “Tweevenings.” This year the lively speaker series at UMD’s Tweed Museum of Art, has revolved around their year long Ceramics exhibit.  “Resurfaced, Reformed: Evolution in Studio Ceramics” was locally curated, includes many local artists and honors the legacy and long roots of ceramic arts in Minnesota. This Tuesday Lake Superior College Professor and Ceramic Artist Dorian Beaulieu will be speaking at the Tweed at 6:30 p.m.  It is free and open to the public.

UMD art student Desiree Harper opens her exhibit "Regrowth" at the Tweed Museum of Art on Tuesday, Dec 2, with a reception from 4-6pm.

This week Bill Shipley joins us as he prepares to receive the 2014 Arts and Culture Lifetime Artist Award from the The Depot Foundation.

This week Radio Gallery celebrates Art for Earth Day - Gallery Hop. This Saturday April 26th the Twin Ports celebrate. Joining in the fun is UMD's Tweed Museum of Art with the 2014 Art & Design Annual Student Exhibit and Open Studios. They'll have bands, hands-on activities, a reception, awards and more.

Radio Gallery sits down with the artist before her big opening at the Tweed. She shares some of the ideas behind her wood block print series and about the intense processes that went into creating this large scale work. Anne Labovitz: Composite Portraits opens at The Tweed Museum of Art and Anne will be on hand to chat about her work.
