Anne Labovitz

Minnesota artist and Duluth native Anne Labovitz is on a 5-year artistic journey celebrating Duluth sister cities.  Through conversations with people and leaders in our five sister cities and in Duluth, Labovitz has created works in paint, words and video that include, reflect and are inspired by these personal interactions.  In 2017 the exhibit will finish its travels to all the Duluth sister cites, culminating in a show at the Tweed Museum of Art in May, 2018.

Anywhere art is presented (be it in a gallery or otherwise), Annie Dugan gives us a few simple activities to help open our minds to look at art differently.  For example, instead of the 14-second (average) time one usually takes to observe a piece of art, try timing yourself for two minutes.  What more can you see?  Where does your mind take you as you spend two minutes with an artwork?

Listen to Radio Gallery for our conversation with Tavera about the uncovering, understanding and deconstructing of stereotypes and racism of Mexican-American culture.

Jeffrey T. Larson

The current exhibit Domestic Space at the UMD Tweed Museum of Art is a collection of work by the classically trained painter Jeffery T. Larson.  This gathering of work and subsequent publication are the result of a curated show drawing from the span of his career with portraits and still lifes held in disparate private and public collections.  Larson says  "Some of these pieces, I haven't seen in years."

Kathy McTavish

At Lizards Art Gallery on Thursday, August 11 from 5-7 p.m. is the opening reception for Collusion, an exhibit by two pairs of artists working collaboratively in their respective mediums: Richard Gruchalla & Carrin Rosetti  (Raku) and Jeffrey Schmidt & Kristen Wasyliszyn (oils and acrylics).

The UMD Tweed Museum of Art is closed for a few months for a behind the scenes construction project.  All the art has been moved out of the museum so the space can get a heating and ventilation renovation.  The upside is that all that art, although temporarily stowed away, will come back in a new and re-invented collection of exhibits. Radio Gallery takes you on a behind the scenes tour from the museum preparator, Anneliese Verhoeven.

Alex Colorito

As students at UMD prepare for winter break, one art Digital Art and Photography student has hung his senior show Metaphysical at the Tweed Museum of Art for the last week of classes.  The photography of Alex Colorito is on display for this week only and he joins us on Radio Gallery to talk about his work and his process.  His interest in photography and cinematography developed from skateboarding and action shots but has grown into a love of film and his 120, medium-format camera.

Each Tuesday a new exhibit goes up in Tweed Museum of Art at UMD. They have a gallery dedicated to sharing the work of UMD Art and Design students; paticularly their senior shows. On Tuesday, November 17, Sam Corbett opens her senior show "Child Support," an interactive print exhibit that shares the stories and experiences of families and children affected by divorce. Corbett's work is on display through November 29 with an opening reception on November 17 from 4-6 pm.
