Listen to our session with Minnesota native and co-founder of the Jayhawks Olson, who returned to our studios with his wife and musical partner Ringvold (a native of Norway) on December 13, 2017.We talked about the making of their latest album, Spokeswoman of the Bright Sun, which they recorded at their home in Joshua Tree. We also heard about their time in Albania, where Ringvold learned to play a folk instrument called the qanon, which plays an important part on the new disc.

This Minneapolis group plays gypsy jazz with smooth female vocals. They recently released their second album, Masquerade. We found out more when they joined us in the studio on August 11, 2017.

This Minneapolis musician fronted The Bill Mike Band and has collaborated with Haley Bonar and Carnage, among others. In 2013 he developed tinnitus and hyperacusis (extreme sound sensitivity), which threatened to end his ability to make music. After several years of seeking effective treatments, Michel has found relief from a combination of medication and mindfulness techniques. His latest album On the Mend, is his first studio album in seven years and his first all-acoustic album.

This Minnesota four-piece string band melds influences ranging from bluegrass to jazz to metal and features a blend of male and female vocals. 2016 was a busy year for the group; they toured nationally, signed to a record label, and released their first full-length album, Prodigal. We were happy to welcome them to the studio on July 7, 2017. They performed the same night at the Red Herring in Duluth.

Live from Studio A on KUMD is made possible by Ampers and the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

When this indie folk duo from upstate New York passed through Duluth several months ago, they left anyone who was lucky enough to catch them live wanting more. In 2016 they released their sophomore EP, In the Altogether, showcasing their beautifully-crafted songs and rich male/female vocal harmonies. They returned to Duluth on June 13, 2017 for a show at the Red Herring Lounge and joined us in the studio that afternoon.

When this duo joined us in the studio last year, we learned how North Shore native Kat Axtell and Argentinian Julian Hernandez came together in Buenos Aires to form this pop soul project. Still based in Argentina, they returned to KUMD on June 8, 2017. They perform the same night at Dubh Linn in Duluth and June 10, 2017 at the Red Herring Lounge as part of a U.S. tour. We'll find out more about their second EP, Traveler, due out on June 16, 2017.

KUMD is turning 60, and to celebrate, we are gathering on-air DJs of the past a present and their bands to perform at The Red Herring Lounge on Friday, June 9th. This concert will precede our 60th Anniversary Celebration happening on Saturday, June 10th.

The show starts at 8:00pm and will feature performances by Rick McLean, Woodblind, Tender Ness, and Superior Siren.

We are wrapping up our 60th Anniversary Celebration in style by partnering with Teague Alexy as he releases his new album: Circuit Sessions with a CD release party at The Red Herring Lounge on Saturday, June 10th at 8pm.
