This week a unique intersection of art and science is on display in the Duluth community. Catch"Black Gold: Lake Sturgeon Zine Release and Art Exhibit," at Prøve Gallery with a gathering and panel discussion about the most ancient fish around - the sturgeon.

You can see over 40 sturgeon works of art on display in large format at Prøve Gallery plus pick up the zine, a printing off all the images. All proceeds from the sale of the zine go toward traveling this exhibit to communities on the Great Lakes including this Duluth show.

This Friday, December 16 is a special night at Prøve Gallery celebrating the latest edition of locally produced ABZ: All Black Zine.  The show brings together artists, writers, storytellers, musicians and more in a multi media and interactive event.

What are Plys?  Skateboard decks; made from multiple thin plys of wood.  This week on Radio Gallery the show's organizer Taylor Kline of Prove Gallery explains the exciting and innovative annual art event Plys with Purpose.  Artists from Duluth and around the world participate each year to support local efforts to build a skate park for Duluth youth.  Over 30 different piece of original graphic and fine art will be up for grabs this Friday.

103.3 The Basement is a proud sponsor of Plys with Purpose opening at Prove Gallery on Friday, November 18th from 7pm-10pm. The gallery will showcase a silent auction of 30 crafted skateboard decks by local, national, and international artists with proceeds going to the Gary New Duluth Development Alliance for their ongoing efforts to build a public, stat-of-the-art skateboard park in Gary New Duluth. In the last three years, Plys with Purpose has included more than 100 artists, and this year, we will catch up with those artists who are new and returning.

Bob Pokorney

Local Artist Bob Pokorney has a new show of his striking paintings opening this Friday at Prove Gallery in Duluth.  In Bob Pokorney: New Large Scale Paintings, his impressionistic style and landscape imagery endure but are livelier, brighter and include human constructs.  He joins us on Radio Gallery to talk about his latest work.  This opening reception is Friday, September 16, 7 - 10pm at Prove Collective Gallery at 21 N. Lake Ave in downtown Duluth.

On Thursday night at 6 p.m. at the Duluth Art Institute, Susannah Magers will give a presentation about artist opportunities through the 2017 Emerging Artist Series at Rochester Art Center.  Ms. Magers is the Deputy Director and Curator of Contemporary Art at RAC.

This week we speak with Flo Matamoros, an artist and a member of the Prøve Gallery collective.  This month, Prøve Gallery celebrates acquiring non-profit status and a new group show called "Ripple Effect." The show's theme was inspired by the work of Sarah Brokke's and creates a connection with her new exhibit and Flo's work up soon at the Duluth Art Institute.   The show at Prøve Gallery opens on Friday October 16th with a reception from 7-11pm.

Prøve Gallery in Duluth is accepting submissions for the the upcoming group show called "Ripple Effect," celebrating the long-lasting spark that mentoring can create for artists.  October's show takes the name from a show curated by local artist and professor Sarah Brokke in 2009, with student work in the spotlight.  "Ripple Effect" opens at Prøve Gallery on Friday, October 16th. The submission deadline is September 23.
