Matt Kania

This week you may see folks around town creating art in public with easels set up in front of vistas of ever-changing light. "Plein Air Duluth: Paint du Nord" returns to the Twin Ports July 9-14, 2017.

This is a live painting festival drawing artists from near and far to enjoy time on Lake Superior, painting alone and in groups.  By Friday, the work will be ready for showing with an opening reception at Blacklist Ales in downtown Duluth.  The celebration is from 5-7 p.m. on Friday July 14, with live music and prizes awarded by the festival juror Matt Kania.  Matt is a plein air painter and he joins us on Radio Gallery.

A "quick paint" at the zoo this week, Wednesday at Glensheen and all kinds of swirling social media regarding the Duluth Art Institute's Plein Air Duluth: Paint du Nord week ...  a mural installation all this week at Frost River in West Duluth

Grand Marias Art Colony

This week  I thought we might take a road trip up the North Shore to see what’s happening at the Grand Marais Art Colony. On Friday Oct 28 it's the the Annual Member show and on November 10 the Art Colony co-sponsors the Annual Empty Bowl fundraiser to combat hunger in Cook County. Also up through November 13th is the exhibit from the September Grand Marais Plein Air Painting Festival.  We share stories from this years judge and Minnesota plein air painter Dan Weimer.  Check out the Grand Marais Art Colony if you are up the shore, there is always something worth checking out.

Dan Wiemer

Minnesota painter Dan Wiemer joins us this week on Radio Gallery as he prepares for a week on the North Shore at the Grand Marais Art Colony for Plein Air Grand Marais, September 9 - 16, 2016.  Wiemer is a watercolor and acrylic painter who, at this point in his career enjoys his focus on the natural world and has been involved in plein air painting for many years.  He will be the awards juror for this year's festival and is also the Colony's features artist for the month of September.

Paint du .... rain.  From a train.

The Duluth Art Institute's second annual outdoor painting festival, Plein Air Duluth: Paint du Nord,  finds forty artists from Minnesota jostling along in a baggage car en route to their first scenic Northland location this morning.

Watercolors, anyone?

36 artists - unsupervised - will be roaming the outdoor landmarks of Duluth this week.  They have five days to create five masterpieces as part of the Plein Air Duluth: Paint Du Nord festival all this week at the Duluth Art Institute.  Thursday, the community gets to join in and paint with them at the Rose Garden, and then Friday is the unveiling of their work.
