KUMD Album Review: The Chinchees

Apr 5, 2017
The Chinchees

The Chinchees | The Chinchees

In a world of countless alt-rock bands, many struggle to find their own space and create a unique sound. The Chinchees make their first attempt, a somewhat successful one, in their first self-titled album, The Chinchees. The Chinchees represents a flawed, but potent attempt, one that might not achieve all its goals, but still spurs on interest for the band’s future.

This local musician will join us in the studio on Tuesday, April 4 at 2pm. He releases his new album, Circuit Sessions, the same day. Recorded in Duluth, the disc features musicians Eric Pollard of Actual Wolf, Steve Garrington of Low, and Minneapolis guitarist Jake Hanson. We'll talk with Teague about the album, his writing and podcast projects, and his upcoming release show in Duluth.

Fiddler Eric Christopher and banjo player Anthony Ihrig of this Minnesota bluegrass 5-piece joined us in the studio on March 31, 2017. We talked about the band's non-traditional approach to playing traditional bluegrass; for example, their new album, "Daddy was a Bankrobber," due out June 16th, takes its name from a Clash tune they cover.  The band was in town to play at their first Cabin Fever Festival, sponsored by the Minnesota Bluegrass and Old-time Music Association.

KUMD Album Review: The Shins

The Shins

Self-produced and recorded, James Mercer debuts his first album as the sole proprietor of The Shins. Purging the other band members in 2008 due to creative circumstance propelled Mercer to grudgingly throw himself into the limelight for Heartworms.

KUMD Album Review: Jonwayne

Jonwayne

Jonwayne | Rap Album Two

Jon Wayne is a rapper from California who kicked himself off the football team and into the theater group at his high school. Stepping off the sports field and into one filled with words and expression was his first into becoming Jonwayne. Sharing the same stage name as the actor is actually a homage to his ancestor from the American Revolutionary War: General “Mad” Anthony Wayne.

Adam Herman fronts this Iron Range roots-rock band, who are releasing their second album, St. John's Dance. We caught up with the band and found out what they've been up to since their last visit when members joined us in the studio on March 3, 2017. They had a CD release show the next night at Pizza Luce in Duluth.

This Cloquet native, now based in Boston, joined us in the studio on March 3, 2017 to chat and play tunes from his new EP, In the Belly of the Feast. The EP brings back songs that were written during Kallestad's time with local trio Saint Anyway, but put away once the band split. He performed the same night at Sir Benedicts Tavern in Duluth.

KUMD Album Review: A$AP Mob

Feb 22, 2017
A$AP Mob

There has long been a sort of familial structure behind some of the most successful entities in the rap game. Hip-hop families such as Wu-Tang Clan, Public Enemy, Junior M.A.F.I.A and Death Row are representative of collectives that wield longstanding success.
