KUMD Album Review: Ab-Soul

Jan 4, 2017
Ab-Soul

Ab-Soul | Do What Thou Wilt

Carson, California, rapper, Ab-Soul has long been known for embracing all parts of his consciousness. Now he’s back.

While Trampled by Turtles takes a break, mandolinist Erik Berry has been working on his own projects, including this Grateful Dead-based duo that teams him with Marc Gartman of Glitteratti, Coyote, and various other Duluth bands. They joined us in the studio on January 4, 2017, to talk about their mutual love for the Dead and how they've approached the project, with each performance recreating the entire set list for a particular Grateful Dead show. We found out how they pick which shows to do and how they face the challenge of adapting full-band tunes to just guitar and mandolin.  The two were kicking off a Wednesday night residency at the Red Herring Lounge in Duluth for the month of January.

KUMD Album Review: J. Cole

Dec 28, 2016

Fayetteville rapper and Dreamville Records founder, J. Cole tells a powerful story on his newest album, 4 Your Eyez Only. The album differs from Cole's previous releases– The Sideline Story, Born Sinner and 2014 Forest Hills Drive– but make no mistake; this is J. Cole at his finest.

4 Your Eyez Only showcases the life and the legacy of Cole’s childhood friend, James McMillan Jr. — Wanna be rapper gone drug dealer — who serves as a symbol for the struggles faced by black America.

Bob Dylan Painting

Saturday on Highway 61 Revisited we share a special holiday show.  As always host John Bushey shares rare  and unknown cuts, none so dear as when Bob Dylan reads "A Visit from St. Nicholas," better known as "Twas the Night Before Christmas" first published in 1823.

Leader of legendary Duluth indie rockers Giljunko and founder of local lo-fi label Shaky Ray Records, Mark Lindquist formed Little Black Books as a band around 2005. He's since moved a few hours west of the Twin Ports, where he continues to record solo as Little Black Books in his home studio; he releases an annual Christmas single and recently put out an EP. We caught up with Lindquist and heard some of his holiday tunes when he joined us in the studio on December 22, 2016.

KUMD Album Review: Dr. Dog

Dec 21, 2016
Dr. Dog

This has become a year that won’t be forgotten. For whatever reason someone felt personally victimized by 2016, one thing is for sure, countless influential and inspiring music releases have been a saving grace. Dr. Dog adds themselves to that list with the release of their second album this year, Abandoned Mansion.

12/21 Live From Studio A: Benjamin Cartel

Dec 21, 2016

We welcomed this indie folk/rock artist from Brooklyn back to our studios on December 21, 2016. We heard some tunes and find out what he's been up to since his last visit a year ago. He performed the same night at the Red Herring Lounge in Duluth.

KUMD Album Review: Childish Gambino

Dec 14, 2016
Childish Gambino

Childish Gambino | Awaken, My Love!

In retrospect, the signs of what was to come from the mind of Childish Gambino were all there. It was all too obvious. Yet there was no way to prepare for the bombshell that is the eleven tracks of Awaken, My Love! Not even the more soulful moments of his previous release, Kauai, are enough to explain what’s about to take place.

KUMD Album Review: Sarah Krueger

Dec 7, 2016
Sarah Krueger

Sarah Krueger | Northern Air EP

Thanksgiving has come and gone, meaning holiday music of all types is allowed to take back its musical throne throughout the month of December. Some wait all year for it, while others have learned to grin and bear their way through it. Thankfully, Sarah Krueger provides a meeting point for both types of listeners.

Low-income Duluthians took center stage at a unique candidate forum in October.  They shared their experiences and struggles with candidates for state and county offices and then asked the candidates - pointedly - for specific commitments and actions on several critical policy measures.

We'll be bringing you their stories and the reactions of the candidates to their requests in the weeks to come.

This folk/pop singer/songwriter was a regular performer at local coffee houses and in the Homegrown Music Festival during her time attending UMD. Now based in St. Paul, she finally released her first EP on December 11, 2016. She gave us a preview on December 9, 2016 when she joins us in the studio.

The Pines' David Huckfelt and Benson Ramsey, joined by Ramsey's brother Alex, returned to their Iowa roots to record their latest full-length disc, Above the Prairie, an intimate Americana collection released back in February. They recently followed it up with Pasture II, the second EP in their self-released series paying tribute to the American folk song tradition. We heard about both of those releases when the band joined us in the studio on December 2, 2016.

KUMD Album Review: The Shacks

Nov 30, 2016

The Shacks | The Shacks EP

Shannon Wise and Max Shrager walked into the studio in Queens, New York, on a whim one day in 2014 and left under a new name, The Shacks. The duo holds its own with Shrager’s musical skills that have been recognized since the tender age of 14 and Wise’s feathery voice to form their self-titled release, The Shacks EP.
