Local Art

Last month Adam Swanson opened a new show called “Art and Science” at the Zeitgeist Arts Cafe in Duluth.

“Art and Science” expands on his common threads of humans, animals and their coexistence in the world.  This new body of work brings in ideas of energy, sustainability, machines and how humans have the ability to change their impact in the world.  Swanson said “The more we learn about our surroundings, where we came from and who we are, the more likely we will thrive in a universe of endless possibilities.”

Mn Artists

If you are a Minnesota artist you have likely heard of mnartists.org, a long running local arts project of the Walker Arts Center. Mn Artists is an online community that spills over into the gallery. With the goal for artists to reach larger and more distant audiences, the online community not only offers web space to artists to share their work and profile, but works to connect artists, to inspire collaboration and to propel local art into the regional and national scene.

Chris Dunn

Check out "Duluth Noir," a new summer exhibit from local artist Chris Dunn of Rooster Tail Ink, on view at the Red Herring Lounge. Dunn has created a new body of work in his unique ink drawing style with a series evoking Duluth's urban landscape.  Dunn's work combines thick, lush lines with a quick and light hand, achieved through multiple renderings. Offering many versions of the each work rather than one final selection, sheds light on his process and perspectives.

In 2009, local artists joined together with the Superior Business Improvement District to form a group called SPAC2ES, which stands for Superior Public Art Creating Community Environments. With a mission of using art to revitalize the city, the artists from SPAC2ES have painted murals and held exhibitions all over downtown Superior. This week, textile artist Erika Mock talks about SPAC2ES and their contributions to the local art scene, which are now reaching out to high school students, as well.

Several of the Northshore's local artists and studios are gearing up for winter, as many of them prepare to open their holiday exhibits. Art openings are a wonderful way to get out into the community, as well as an opportunity to find beautiful handmade Christmas gifts. This week we speak with Rick Hansen, curator of the Prove Gallery's "Under 100" sale.
