Listen to our session with this Wisconsin native, formerly of Hugh Bob and the Hustle, who recently released a solo EP, Lost + Found. After moving to Nashville to explore more music opportunities, the singer/songwriter has had the chance to tour with Nikki Lane, Margo Price, and other Nashville-based performers. He joined us in the studio on December 18, 2017.

We were excited to host this all-star lineup of string musicians in our studios on December 15, 2017.  They were in town for what was billed as a "String Summit" at Duluth's newest venue, Sound.

Husband-and-wife duo Kristoffer and Abby Jo Robin make up this Americana folk/grass group. Originally from Mankato, the pair traveled around the country as glass artists at Renaissance Fairs before making Duluth their home base for most of the year while still spending a few months at festivals in North Carolina and Arizona. We welcomed them back to the studio on December 15, 2017 to talk about their new album, Son of the Machine, and share some tunes.

If you've seen the Mahtowah, Minnesota country gospel band the Holy Hootenanners, you know they sometimes bring their kids onstage to contribute to a tune or two. Now some of those offspring, ranging in age from 11 to 14, have formed their own group and recently recorded an album with Rich Mattson at Sparta Sound. They have a release show for that disc, American Hippie, on Saturday, December 16 at Beaner's Central in Duluth and joined us in the studio on December 14, 2017 for a preview.

Listen to our session with Minnesota native and co-founder of the Jayhawks Olson, who returned to our studios with his wife and musical partner Ringvold (a native of Norway) on December 13, 2017.We talked about the making of their latest album, Spokeswoman of the Bright Sun, which they recorded at their home in Joshua Tree. We also heard about their time in Albania, where Ringvold learned to play a folk instrument called the qanon, which plays an important part on the new disc.

Fiddler Liesel Wilson of the Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua Orchestra joins Sue Spencer and Jim Ofsthun of Celtic bands Willowgreen and McGinnis' Kitchen in this group that performs music from around the world. Last year the trio put out a holiday album,Glen Tidings; this year they'll be performing a holiday show on Thursday, December 14 at 7:30pm at Duluth's Peace United Church of Christ. They'll bring some holiday cheer to our studios and give us a preview of that show on Tuesday, December 12 at 1pm.

11/17 Live From Studio A: Josh Harmony and Co.

In addition to writing and performing psychedelic rock, this Minneapolis musician is also a pro skateboarder and a visual artist. He and his band performed at the Rex Bar in Duluth on November 17 at the afterparty for Prove Collective's Plys with Purpose event, an exhibition and silent auction featuring skateboard decks. Proceeds from this fundraiser go towards building a state-of-the-art skate park in Gary New Duluth. They joined us in the studio for a preview that same afternoon.

Thomsen lead her Echoes of Peace choir at the annual Duluth Sister Cities International fundraising concert, One Village Many Voices, on November 3 at St. Scholastica's Mitchell Auditorium. This year's guest performers included Wheeler, who's best known as the actress who portrayed Janice on TV's Friends. Wheeler is also a singer, songwriter, workshop facilitator. Hassan Dyer is a vocalist, percussionist, vocal improviser, and storyteller who was raised in France and Senegal and has been influenced by the music of West Africa.

This Midwestern singer/songwriter plays Americana heavily influenced by his rock and punk background. In 2015 he released his first album and currently has a new EP in the works. He joined us in the studio on October 13 for a preview of his show the following night at the Barrel Room in Fitger's.

Rich Mattson and the Northstars
KUMD

Mattson has left his mark all over the Minneapolis, Duluth, and Iron Range music scenes through the years in bands including the Glenrustles and Ol' Yeller and as a producer and owner of Sparta Sound Studio. His latest project, which also features his partner Germaine Gemberling, releases its third album, Aeroplane Mode, on Friday, October 13 at the Cedar Lounge in Superior. We got a preview when the band stopped by for a session that same afternoon at 2:30.

Local musicians Jerree Small and Marc Gartman have been making beautiful acoustic music together as Coyote for 10 years now. Along the way they added bass player Matt Mobley and released a handful of albums. In honor of the band's anniversary, they performed at Sacred Heart Music Center in Duluth on September 29. We got a preview when Small and Gartman joined us in the studio the same day.

This local bluegrass-influenced four-piece releases its third album, Just Can't Win in style with back-to-back shows at Pizza Luce, September 29 and September 30. They also squeezed in an in-store performance at the Electric Fetus and a session with us on September 29.

This Hibbing indie rock trio has been around since 2011, releasing one album along the way. They joined us in the studio on September 28. They performed the same night as part of Beaner's Central's One Week Live and on September 30 at the Rex Bar in Duluth.

This native of Northern Minnesota's Leech Lake Indian Reservation has a new album combining her environmental activism and her music. The release, The Beast and the Garden, features veteran musician Mark Shark of the late John Trudell's Bad Dog band among others. Humphrey joined us in the studio on September 19, 2017 with The Long Hairz Collective; they all perform on Friday, September 22 at the AICHO Galleries in Duluth.

9/15 Live From Studio A: The She Shells

Singer/songwriters Thea Ennen and Lisa Kane have teamed up to form this harmonizing, eclectic country folk duo. Based in the Twin Cities, they performed in Duluth on Friday, September 15 as part of the first ever FEmnFEST, an all female music festival happening all weekend. We got a preview when they joined us in the studio on on September 15, 2017.
