Program Director

Program Director Maija Jenson invites you to share your programming comments or to get involved at the station. KUMD thrives on your involvement, through member support, volunteer efforts and community participation.  Maija joined the KUMD team in 2008.  She is the host of the weekly arts program "Radio Gallery" and is one of the many staff, student and volunteer djs that make KUMD your community connection. She brings a lifetime of public radio listening, degrees in journalism and art and 15 years of public radio experience from KFAI, WHA, WSUM and KUMD.   Maija was raised in northern Minnesota by activist artist hippies with no TV but lots of public radio including the CBC, MPR and KAXE.  Besides music, radio, teaching and art, Maija enjoys an active life in the great outdoors with her family.    

Ways to Connect

Throughout finals week at UMD, the students Ziyad Kadir and Julianne Glawe have been working to display their products for 2-D Digital Studio. Their pieces each represent something meaningful to their heritage and was on display at the Tweed Museum until May 11th.

Closing on MAY 14 is the Duluth Art Institute's exhibition, "Fresh, New, and True: Work by Emerging Artists." Suzanne Wyss, one of the featured artists, met with Radio Gallery to discuss her work.

As the "Homegrown Music Festival" has expanded over the years, it has started featuring art forms beyond music, including video and photography. On Thursday, May sixth, Matt Stengl has a photo exhibition going up at Pizza Luce as part of Homegrown.

The Homegrown Music Festival begins Sunday, May 2nd, and is a week where the entire community can see the rich culture of music and art surrounding the Twin Ports. Kenny Kalligher is a long time Duluth musician who will be talking to us about his involvement in Homegrown.

Live painting: Useful Jenkins in Eau Claire, WI

Join us as we talk with Jeredt Runions, a very influential artist and live painter located in Duluth, Minnesota. He will be painting at the "Respect You Mother Earth Festival" on May first. Runions also has a show going up at Red Mug Coffee House in Superior on Firday, May 7th, during the Homegrown Festival.

Several Duluth and Superior art galleries will be celebrating Earth Day Saturday, April 17th from eleven to five p.m., by holding a collaberative exhibition, "Art for Earth Day Gallery Hop."

Ten graphic design students at the Duluth Business University put together a graphic design show at Lizzards Art Gallery, called "Group Exhibit: DBU Graphic Design Students." The show opened on March 18th, and will wrap on April 14th, 2010.

The March show at Washington Gallery in Duluth is a dual photography exhibit: "Postcards from the Sea of Tranquility" by Shannon Cousino and "Akimbo" by Kim Borst.

"Colder by the Lake" is a comedy theatre group in Duluth that has been around for over twenty years. The group began with sketch comedy, and went on to many other types of original and adapted comedies, including an original Comedy Opera. This year, the group put on another sketch comedy, "Older by the Lake," which was performed on March 11th-13th and the 18th-20th at 7:30 pm, and March 14th at 2 pm.

This week, Radio Gallery features UMD's Out Cold week by interviewing two Yeti Film Festival entries, Spencer Johnson and Andy Lindberg. There were two nights of the festival in which students vote for finalists, February 22nd and 23rd, and the finalists' films were shown on February 25th.
